ANSON COUNTY — Anson County remains under a boil water advisory following a major water transmission line break that caused periods of low water pressure and service outages across the county last week.
The advisory was issued after the water main break caused low pressure and disruptions in the county’s distribution system, leading to the cancellation of the Anson County Commissioner meeting. As of publication, the advisory remains in effect while water quality testing continues.
“Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system,” said Assistant Utility Director Christopher Harrington in a press release last Tuesday afternoon.
Harrington continued, “Therefore, when water service is restored, consumers are advised to boil all water used for human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or use bottled water. Vigorous boiling for one (1) minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water. Water customers are strongly urged to conserve water whenever possible. This advisory will remain in effect until further written notification is issued.”
The county issued a press release with additional guidance to help residents navigate the ongoing advisory. Officials said water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil for at least one minute before it is used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes or preparing food.
The county noted that the advisory could remain in place even after water service has been fully restored while officials complete water quality testing.
Residents were advised that once service is restored, they may notice a chlorine odor, which does not impact the safety of the water.
Laundry can be washed as normal, although some sediment or cloudy water may occur as the system is restored. Dishwashers that reach sanitizing temperatures are generally considered safe to use. Those washing dishes by hand should use hot water and allow dishes to air dry completely.
It is also recommended to give pets boiled and cooled water as a precaution during the advisory to prevent illnesses.
On Monday, officials announced that repairs to the vault located on US Hwy 74 Service for Misty Rd, Sommerset Rd, and Boylin Rd will remain down for the remainder of Monday, with services expected to be restored by the end of the day on Tuesday.
Due to the extended outage, crews will be delivering cases of water to affected residents. If anyone is experiencing any leaks or breaks, they are encouraged to be reported to the nonemergency communications line at 704-694-7083.
Residents can find updates on the latest status of the advisory through Anson County’s official website and social media channels. Officials say they will notify the public once testing confirms the water is safe and the boil advisory has been lifted.
