Anson High School’s varsity girls basketball team won the Chesterfield Girls Championship Christmas Tournament Dec. 27-29. On Dec. 27, the girls played Berea High School and won 48-32; on Dec. 28, they played McBee High School and won 59-41 to become Tournament Champions.
“Against McBee, Jaida Robinson pulled down a career high of 16 rebounds and scored 19 points that earned her MVP of the tournament,” coach Deloris Covington said via email. “Shinitra Little was named ‘All Tournament Player.’ Honorable Mentions are Zahria Alderson and Chanel Pauldo! Congratulations, Lady Cats!”
The AHS men’s basketball team won six out of their last eight games. They played two Christmas Tournaments, with the first at Rockwell High School in South Carolina Dec. 20-22. In a game against South Mecklenburg on Dec. 20 Anson won 63-59. The next day they played a semifinal game against Spartanburg Christian Academy, winning 63-50. The Bearcats lost their next game against Rock Hill on Dec. 22, racking up 58 points to Rock Hill’s 70.
The game against Rock Hill was close, according to coach Brandon Rains, with Rock Hill pulling away at the end. “Bunyon Tyson made the all-tournament team,” Rains said. “We started to come together as a full team that tournament and that carried over to the next tournament.”
The Bearcats played in their second Christmas Tournament at Chesterfield High School in South Carolina from Dec. 27-29. Anson played Dillon on Dec. 27, winning with 71-69. They won again in their game against Great Falls with a final score of 70-51, and once again against Lugoff-Elgin with a close 63-62.
“We played Dillon in the first game of the Chesterfield tournament and Dillon outplayed us three quarters,” Rains said. “We were down as much as 20 at a time, but won 71-69.
“The MVP of the Chesterfield tournament was Tyson,” Rains said. “Stephen Minter and Devonta Teal made All-Tournament in that tournament. The guys that impressed me that really stepped up that may have been unexpected for defense were Dan Murray, Terrell Tillman, William Smith and Jerrell McNeil. Jerrell stepped up for us and played defense really well. Steven Minster and Devonta Teal really had a solid two tournaments. Ray Davis had great bench leadership and sacrificed for the team, giving quality minutes when Minster was in foul trouble. I really want to praise him because he was a true team player.”
The next AHS basketball games will be at home versus Parkwood on Jan. 11 beginning at 4 p.m.
