The Anson Bearcats girls basketball team lost Dec. 19’s away non-conference game against Monroe 54-49, according to the high school sports site Maxpreps.com. The girls were down from the start, ending the first quarter 9-12, Monroe. They picked up in the second quarter, earning 15 points to Monroe’s 12, but after halftime slipped behind Monroe 16-18 in the third quarter and again behind 11-15 in the fourth, ending the game with a close 54-49 in Monroe’s favor.
The girls won Dec. 20’s neutral tournament game against Hedgesville 53-39, however. They finished the first quarter ahead of Hedgesville with a healthy 17-4, though they fell behind in the second quarter when Hedgesville scored 14-7. The Bearcats narrowly outscored Hedgesville in the third quarter 12-11, setting the stage for their fourth-quarter performance of 17-10, Anson, winning the Bearcats the game with a solid 53-39.
