The Lady Cats started their game strongly on Friday against the Central Cabarrus Vikings following a Nov. 20 win against the Concord Spiders. The Lady Cats outscored the Vikings in the first quarter by a score of 13-3 but lost some steam in the second quarter, scoring only eight points to the Vikings’ six.
By halftime, they’d brought the score to a heartening 22-9, with Shinitra Little leading the way in scoring with seven points. Little’s career high was 19 points and 10 rebounds against Concord, according to coach Deloris Covington.
The Lady Cats held a halftime discussion focused on playing defense and moving the ball in the half-court offense. The talk seemed to work: by the end of the third quarter, they had scored 17 points to the Vikings’ four. The Lady Cats continued to shine throughout the fourth quarter, ending with a decisive win of 52-25.
“The offense and defense picked up,” Covington said via email. “It seemed as if several players were struggling with direction at times, but saying consistent was Zahria Alderson, who was name player of the game.”
Alderson contributed 12 points and 8 assists, and had 14 assists in the Nov. 30 Concord game, according to Covington.
“Zahria has shown consistency throughout every game by playing good defense and especially with the handling of the basketball,” Covington continued. “Congratulations to the Lady Cats for their win over the Central Cabarrus Vikings… and to Zahria Alderson for earning player of the game.”
The Bearcats (varsity only) will travel to Matthews on Dec. 12 to play the Butler Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
