Alphonso Smith of Wadesboro, a veteran of the Afghanistan war, has earned numerous commendations and medals, and was honored by his employer in Marshville on Veterans Day.

Smith is a native of Maryland and has served three tours in Afghanistan with the Maryland National Guard. He moved to Wadesboro in the 1990s but continued to serve with the Guard in Maryland, he said.

He worked with special forces in the United Arab Emirates, for which he received a commendation, and he also earned a special plaque from the governor of Maryland.

His most recent tour of duty in Afghanistan was in 2010. He said he was injured, and was visited by President Barack Obama, who gave him and every member of his unit a presidential coin.
