While the unemployment rate in Anson dropped slightly in June, not all counties were so lucky.

The unemployment rate in Anson fell 0.1 percent to 13.4 percent, according to a July 23 statement from the Employment Security Commission. Unemployment rates fell in 35 counties in June and increased in 45 counties. The rate remained the same in 20 counties.

"The June county data show that for many of the counties in the state, the unemployment rate has showed some level of improvement," ESC Chairman Lynn R. Holmes said. The statewide unemployment rate was 10.1 percent.

Similarly small, if any, fluctuations were seen in the region. Stanly County had an unemployment rate of 11.5 percent, Richmond County 12.8 and Union County 9.4.

Currituck County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state, 4.8 percent. At 16.3 percent, Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate.

The unemployment rate in Anson was 17.1 percent in January and 15.3 percent one year ago.
