The Anson County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) has a new chairwoman.

Nancy Cornwell, formerly the vice chairwoman, was appointed Wednesday to replace Dave Smith. Smith resigned June 18 to become the organization's tourism director on June 21.

Ronnie Morgan was appointed the new vice chairman.

Anna Baucom presented the group's financial report. She said the group had $12,000 in expenses the previous year and its current balance was $73,182.30, not counting the group's June figures.

"I think you've got to spend it to make it," she said. She believes the group must make investments to move forward.

She recommended the TDA hold a budget session to discuss goals over the next year.

Smith said he recently listed a number of publications the Anson County Historical Society could use to publicize events.

Smith believes organizations in the county need to reach out to the surrounding region when attracting crowds for events.

"If you're going to make Anson County flourish, you can't do it with Anson County money," he said.

Baucom said she hopes to attract visitors from far enough away that they would spend the night.

She recommended that organizations planning on holding annual events set up an annual calendar. Smith said a good example of this sort of preparation was the Discover Anson Bike Ride.

Russell Sikes suggested organizations meet and work together to attract outsiders. He said he wanted Smith to coordinate the effort.

Smith said he planned to visit people throughout Anson over the next month.

"We've got to get stuff done as a county," he said.

The group discussed efforts to attract volunteers to staff local historical society sites.

Smith said he wanted to reach out to local women's clubs because so many civic activities were driven by women. Sikes suggested speaking with the local Rotary and Interact Clubs.

Cornwell said opening these sites should be the top priority.
