Citizens in Anson have been working to make the county better for the holidays.

Students at Anson Challenge Academy had created a tree of canned goods to donate to Anson Crisis Ministries.

"There are people out there that need food," India Jackson, a student, said.

She said she may one day be in the same position as those who visit the ministry looking for help.

The canned food drive lasted two weeks.

Mary Gamble, a spokeswoman for the school, said the drive was one of several community service projects required of the students.

Johnny Moore volunteers at the ministry four days a week. He did so for one and a half years, then because of poor circulation, he had to have his leg amputated.

Since April, he has been back at the ministry.

He gathers food for patrons and restocks and organizes the pantry.

He said he came back to work at the ministry because he "wanted to stay busy."

"It beats sitting around the house," he said.

Moore has noticed an increase in traffic around the holidays, but also believes the economy is a factor.

He does not get discouraged.

"I'd rather be here," he said.

He plans to spend Christmas at home.

Moore plans to continue working for the ministry "as long as I'm able to."
