The Anson County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing on the 2010-2011 budget June 15.

The Commission will hold a budget workshop June 26 at 8 a.m. and may approve it then.

Sheriff Tommy Allen presented two of his "many concerns" to the Commission.

First, he requested that a part-time worker at the jail, who was recently hired, be retained for the next fiscal year.

He said a review by an independent body several years ago determined the county should hire six more workers at the jail and the county had only hired two. He said the jail held an average of 40 inmates at that time but now held an average of 62 inmates.

The cost of hiring the worker would be $8,320. Part-time salaries have been eliminated in the budget.

Allen also requested a pre-trial coordinator be hired. The coordinator would help shepherd inmates through the trial process by making sure officers were ready to testify or making sure the clerk of court's office was ready for trial.

"We saved hundreds of hours of people in the jail" when a previous grant provided funds for the position, Allen said.

The position would be part-time at a cost of $7,800.

Allen said he believed the county could save three or four times the expense of the hire, by reducing utilities, money spent on food or housing or having an inmate out of custody when they get sick.

He said the current cost of keeping an inmate was $45 per person per day.

No citizens spoke during the public hearing.
