The uptown Wadesboro area now has a new dining option. The Malsgate, a restaurant/bar, opened its doors on Friday, June 4.

The restaurant is owned and operated by Cynthia Little and her daughters, Carly and Holly. The Little family also owns and operates H.W. Little Hardware in Wadesboro.

The restaurant's namesake is a part of the Little family's history. "The Malsgate is the name of the homeplace in Carlyle, England," Cynthia explained, adding that the bar portion of the restaurant will be called Houston's at the Malsgate, after her father in honor of his 90th birthday.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. The dining room will close at 10 p.m. nightly.

The menu, which is "growing every day," Holly said, includes appetizers, salads, sandwiches and soups, as well as desserts and various sides. The bar is fully licensed, serving both beer and liquor.

"We decided to do this to diversify food choices and to add a little something to uptown Wadesboro," said Carly. "It will also give people something else to do. We wanted to add something fun to uptown."

Misty Harris, economic development director and vice chair of Uptown Wadesboro, Inc., welcomed the restaurant to town on Monday, June 7, with a bouquet of flowers. "Uptown Wadesboro is happy to have a dining establishment uptown," she said.

The Malsgate is located at 121 E. Wade St., across from Wadesboro Town Hall in the former East Wade Grill location. It can be reached at themalsgate@gmail.com.
