That was the verdict after some school board members and officials recently met with the Anson County commissioners.
The Board of Education will hold a joint meeting with the County Commission in July. School board member Russell Sikes said Monday he believes the earliest a referendum could be held would be April 2011.
In other business, Altheria Patton briefed her colleagues on a recent meeting with state legislators. She and other Board of Education members from across North Carolina discussed the budget problems of those bodies and the state.
The North Carolina State Board of Education asked local school boards for suggestions on what should be cut. However, no real consensus was reached.
"Teachers feel the central office should be cut," Patton said. She added there was a real risk of central office staff becoming overwhelmed.
"Are we going to run out of money by the end of the year?" school board member Michael Livingston asked.
"No, we are not," Superintendent Greg Firn replied. He said he also did not expect for the state to ask for the return of any funds. Firn thinks the school board would be hard pressed to return anything since most of the funds for the year have already been spent.
The next school board meeting is June 24 at the central office. Closed session is at 5:30 p.m. and open session is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
