Anson County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a drowning late Wednesday afternoon, May 5.

Deputies, Anson Rescue Squad and Lilesville Fire Department were called to the new boat landing at 4:27 p.m. Witnesses said that a group of individuals were swimming in the area when one male began to have trouble swimming and went under. Others with the group tried to reach him and in fact grabbed him but were unable to bring him up.

Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen indentified the victim as Samuel Alex Montgomery, 23, of Polkton. He was there swimming with his wife and two other individuals.

The body was recovered after searching the water for about two hours. Witnesses told officers the group was going to swim over to a small island when Montgomery got into distress.

“We are told Mr. Montgomery was a strong swimmer and he was a big guy, but apparently something happened and the others could not get him to shore," Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen said. "As the weather warms and more people are out on the river, it is important to be extra careful. Even a good swimmer can get into distress and trouble.”
