More than 150 local job seekers came out Friday to South Piedmont Community College's Career Connections Fair.

There were 36 employers and information booths. Citizens could apply for jobs, learn about what services and educational opportunities are available to them and find out about different fields. More than 150 people visited the fair.

Some of the employers were the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Coffing Hoists and Lynn Thomas Grading.

Dana Simpson was on hand to talk about the medical assistant program, where she is a student. But that was not all.

"We were checking blood glucose levels," she said.

The North Carolina Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services gave information about its mission and services. The agency places the disabled with employers.

"The plan is going to be individualized based on their needs," Melissa Flynn, a business relations representative with the agency, said. She meets with employers to make a match.

Michelle McNulty, an accountability specialist with Centralina Workforce Development Board, talked to citizens about future opportunities in the job market. She said job seekers and students would be well served to seek education or openings in the energy, defense, film, health-care and motor sports markets.

"I would say any career in the healthcare field," she said. Medical assistant, nursing and medical technology programs are hot right now.

The fair took place Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lockhart-Taylor Center. The event is sponsored by South Piedmont Community College, the Anson County Department of Social Services, the Anson County Chamber of Commerce, the Employment Security Commission and Vocational Rehabilitation.
