The Wadesboro Police Department responded to two local businesses April 10, each the site of an attempt by the suspects, according to a statement from Wadesboro Police Chief Janie Schutz.
First, police responded to IGA after a white male entered with what appeared to be a business check. After drawing the attention of the manager, he left.
The two suspects then went to Food Lion, where they were again unsuccessful. However, a description of their vehicle was obtained and Sgt. Tommy Jarman stopped the pair on U.S. 74.
Michael Hamilton Threadgill, 45, of Marshville, and Mickey G. Story, 21, of Peachland, were each charged with one felony count of obtaining money/property by false pretense. Threadgill was placed in the Anson County Jail under a $5,000 bond and Story was placed there under a $3,000 bond.
Schutz said local businesses should write down the driver's license number of those attempting to cash a check and use the license picture to verify the person's identity. She even suggested asking for two forms of identification.
"By doing this it may be a little inconvenient for some, but for those scammers, it will really take them by surprise and hopefully cause them to walk out empty handed," she said.
Business owners who believe the suspects may have attempted to cash a check of any kind at their business should contact the Wadesboro Police Department at 704-694-2167 and ask for Detective Lewis McLendon.
