Once again, representatives of green energy companies presented deals to the county commissioners for placing solar cells at the waste water treatment plant.

Tom Keppar of Greenfield Power and Brian Bednar of Birdseye Energy, made the presentations.

Keppar, the president of Greenfield Power, hopes to place cells on 14 of the plant's 15 drying beds. It would provide enough power to light roughly 1,000 homes.

Each company would be required by law to sell the electricity to the local utility, in this case Progress Energy, while leasing the property from Anson.

Keppar proposed a ten year lease, tied to gross revenue. He said it would be the largest thin film technology plant in North Carolina.

Anson would get two percent of gross sales, estimated to be $5,000 per year.

Bednar was interested in the same site.

"We think that you have a very good site," he said. He mentioned negotiating terms with commissioners.

Members of the Commission stated they were interested in fair bargaining for all parties, however Bednar did not give details of his proposal, as Keppar previously had.

Other Business

The Commission approved a birthday leave policy for county employees.

Employees may have one day of paid leave for their birthday once the six month probationary period has been completed.

Employees must take the leave on their birthday or on a mutually agreed upon date within 10 working days of the employees actual birthday.

This leave is not compensable upon termination and cannot be transferred, banked or carried over past the 10 day window.

"I think it's a great idea," Human Resources manager Lawrence Gatewood said. He added the county's department heads agreed. The policy will be effective July 1.
