A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. March 31 at Marshville United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. in the fellowship hall. A graveside service with military honors will follow at Harmony Community Church.
He grew up in Union County and attended Marshville School. His life was one of service to God, country, family and friends. At Marshville United Methodist Church, he was the chairman of the board and a Sunday school teacher for decades.
He heroically served in the Army-Air Force during World War II, flying 53 missions over Germany and Italy. He received a Medal of Honor for valor. Phifer was a lifetime member of the VFW.
He gave his family and friends support in too many ways to list. His interests included gardening, reading, wood working, travelling, sports and visiting with his many friends and family members. He will be greatly missed but his life will continue through the impact he had on those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Betty Ann; brothers, Warren and Pruitt; and sister, Lillian.
He is survived by his daughters, Frances (Lathan) Williams, Beverly (Charles) Malmin; son, Eric (Eric) Shreiber; brothers, Burton and Keith and their wives; sister, Ethel; three grandchildren; eight grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews.
