Chick-fil-A of Monroe hosted a fundraiser on Saturday, March 13, to support the family of Yolanda Simon, who was murdered inside her Monroe home in February.

A fifth-grade teacher at Peachland-Polkton Elementary School, Simon was a beloved member of the Monroe community and a regular customer at Chick-fil-A, according to a press release issued by the restaurant last week.

Chick-fil-A donated a portion of its sales on Saturday to the family, and also accepted monetary donations. Collection bins were placed at the registers and drive-thru throughout the day on Saturday. The restaurant set up the Yolanda Simon Memorial Fund to benefit the family, including Simon’s 6-year-old daughter, Trinity.

At the end of the day, the amount collected came to $1,423.99, which will be donated to the memorial fund.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” said the restaurant’s general manager, Sheila Funderburk. “Yolanda was a good friend of our team here at Chick-fil-A, and we were heartbroken when we heard the news.”

Added restaurant Operator David Rowland: “It was inspiring to see the outpouring of support for this family. It is obvious from the fundraiser response and turnout at the restaurant Saturday that Yolanda meant a lot to this community.”
