She was born in Wadesboro on June 26, 1935, to the late Benjamin McLauchlin and Sallie Mae Briley Covington, and was also preceded by a sister, Johnsie Mae Blackburn (Rev. Linwood). She graduated valedictorian from Wadesboro High School and attended Greensboro College, where she graduated magna cum laude with a double major in elementary education and religious education.
Claudia and Carle Woodruff “Woody” Mason Jr. of Mecklenburg County married on Dec. 17, 1960, and lived in Chapel Hill while he was in dental school. Upon graduation, they moved to Wilson, where he established his practice. She is a past president of the Alliance to the North Carolina Dental Society.
She grew up in the Wadesboro United Methodist Church, where she had an active role and became equally involved once they moved to Wilson. She served as president of the United Methodist Women and numerous other positions in her church.
Surviving is her husband of 49 years, Woody; daughter, Mary Claudia Huntley (Scott) of Cary; sons, Chip Mason (Catherine) of Raleigh and David Mason (Cate) of Carrboro; four grandchildren; and brother, Benjamin M. Covington Jr. of Chapel Hill.
