Roosevelt Ingram Sr., 79, died Feb. 1, 2010, at Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast in Concord after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at Providence Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Rogers eulogizing. Interment followed the service at Thomasville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was at 12:30 p.m. The family received friends from 4-8 p.m. Feb. 5.

He was born Feb. 26, 1930, in Mt. Gilead to the late Virgil Brown Ingram and Bessie Dockery Ingram.

He was a loving man to his friends and family. He confessed Christ at an early age and joined Providence Missionary Baptist Church, where he served diligently as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and member of the Deacon Board where he served for over 50 years as chairman, the longest serving member.

He was always willing to help others in need. He was known for his conversation, especially about religion. Ingram never met a stranger.

He was educated in the public schools of Montgomery County and graduated from Peabody High School in Troy. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army in March 1951. Ingram served in the Korean War, where he was wounded and received the purple heart.

After his return, he wed the late Margaret Miller Ingram on Nov. 29, 1953. To this union, seven children were born.

He was a retired employee of Alcoa's Badin Works in Badin for more than 30 years. He was a member of its 25 Years Service Club. He was the past Master and Treasurer of M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #196 of North Carolina and a member of American Legion Post 358, the NAACP, Disbled American Veterans and formerly a member of the Montgomery County Housing Authority, the Board of Directors of Highland Community Center, O-Layman Treasurer of the Little Pee Dee Association of Baptist Churches and supported numerous charitable organizations and causes.

After Margaret's death, he wed Sophia Robinson Ingram on Nov. 15, 2007. She remained by his side until the end.

He was preceded in death by four children, Rosa Marie Ingram Matthews Cunningham, Amy LaRose Ingram, Olivia Ray and Myra Ingram; two brothers, James Brown and Robert Lee Ingram; and one sister, Jettie Mae Lindsey.

He is survived by his wife, Sophia Robinson Ingram of Troy; three sons, Roosevelt Ingram Jr. and Edwin (Valerie) Allen Ingram, both of Mt. Gilead, and Ronald (Pamela) Ingram of Hampton, Va.; daughter, Kimberly Jantee Ingram of High Point; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Mary Ingram of New Haven, Conn., Bertha Mae Miller of Hampton, Va., Emma Jean Knight of Mt. Gilead and Irene Rowly; brother-in-law, Daniel Miller; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The services are in the care of Smith's Funeral Directors.
