On Feb. 9, the Bearcats were victorious at home over Parkwood High School, 64-55, on Senior Night.
The Bearcats never trailed after jumping out to an early 9-0 lead. Porter Ridge made a stab at a rally in the final quarter, cutting Anson's lead to one.
"Tonight was a great opportunity for us to reward our four seniors: Chris Christian, Garry Mcknight, Mike Williams and Emmanuel Hough," coach Matt Sides said in an e-mail. "They have worked extremely hard and paved the road for future success in our basketball program."
Four players reached double digits. Terrence Polk scored 18 points and Christian scored 14 points. Mcknight and Jonathan Hough each had 12 points.
Anson's game against Parkwood, originally scheduled for Friday, was moved to Monday. This 68-58 win on the road clinched the title solely for the Bearcats.
"Winning the conference championship was a goal we talked about two summers ago, when we all came together," Sides said. "I can't say enough about how far these young men have come as individuals and as a basketball team."
Upon their return to Anson, the boys cut down the nets.
Familiar faces led the way for Anson. Christian scored 15 points. Mcknight and Polk each scored 11 points.
"Now that we have a taste of success, we have to let it drive us even more," Sides said. "We still have opportunities to make a run in the conference tournament and the state tournament."
Anson will be the top seed in the conference tournament, which will be held at Marvin Ridge High School. The Bearcats will face the winner of the Weddington and Parkwood game Thursday at either 6 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. in the semi-finals. The schedule is still uncertain.
A victory will put the team in the conference championship game Friday at 8 p.m.
Anson will host a first round state tournament playoff game Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.
