One person is dead and another has been airlifted to Charlotte after a wreck Wednesday afternoon in Polkton.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., John Napier of Peachland was heading east on U.S. 74 in a Con-Way Freight truck when he collided with a white 2009 Honda Accord crossing the highway, according to Trooper K.J. Hower of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The passenger was killed and the driver was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Both names are not being released pending notification of families.

The wreck occurred at the intersection of U.S. 74 and Williams Street, where three gas stations— a Sunoco, a Citgo and a Marathon— are located. The Accord was crossing from Highway 218.

Traffic on both sides of U.S. 74 was redirected for roughly two hours.

"Speed on [Napier's] part doesn't appear to be an issue," Hower said.

When I lived in Polkton I hated this intersection. It is difficult to cross safely and should have had a traffic signal years ago. I hope and pray that this will happen now. As always, someone has to lose their life before the State will do anything. Please stay safe when crossing this intersection. If you are turning left to go toward Wadesboro, sometimes it is difficult to see traffic coming from the Peachland direction.
