Herbert Hoover “Hook” Coggin died peacefully on Jan. 11, 2010, at his home with family and friends at his bedside. He was 81.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, by the graveside in Anson Memorial Park with the Rev. Michael Bye, rector of Calvary Episcopal Church, Wadesboro, officiating.

The family will greet friends tonight (Wednesday) from 6 until 8 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Mr. Coggin was born Aug. 20, 1928, in Montgomery County, one of seven children of the late Hiram Baxter Coggin and Hallett Taylor Coggin. He graduated from Wadesboro High School, where he was a member of the 1946 Eastern North Carolina championship football team, attended State College in Raleigh, and was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church, Wadesboro. He was a charter member of the Wadesboro Jaycees.

A veteran of the United States Army, he was stationed in Germany following World War II and was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict.

He joined his father and brothers in the operation of the family business, Coggin, Inc., a mechanical contracting company.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara H. Coggin, of the home; his daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth (Beth) Coggin Shezhad and Khurram of Wake Forest, Constance (Connie) Coggin Swantko and Jim of Raleigh and Kandie Coggin Sparger and Fred of Wadesboro; his granddaughter, Margaret (Meg) Sparger of Wadesboro; his sister, Betty Jane Owens of Mount Airy, and his nieces and nephews, including Allison Coggin Austin of Wadesboro, and their families.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers J.B., H. Baxter Jr. and James Coggin, and by sisters, Flossie Rollins and Zola Buchanon.
