Anson Idol is tuning up to be another big show, hosted by Travis Barrino, on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Wadesboro Elementary School gymnasium. Presented in the likeness of the hit TV show, American Idol, this event highlights the singing talents of residents throughout the area. Some past winners include Matthew Gibson, Cedresa Coble and LaShonda Huntley. All are still singing and enjoying it!
Anson Idol is quickly gaining the reputation of being the biggest show in the region. The only thing bigger is Bearcat football, which we all know can’t be touched.
An exciting segment of this year’s competition is the pre-event tribute to Michael Jackson beginning at 4 p.m. The entry fee is $5 and there will be three categories in which winners will receive $100. Entertainment during the evening will be provided by the one and only Anson High School Color Guard. To end the evening, a dance featuring DJ Storm from Power 98 will be enjoyed by all.
Contestants will take the stage to compete in two rounds of singing competition. Three judges will decide who progresses from the first round to the second round; meanwhile the audience will determine the winner of the final round. It is very important that you invite family and friends to come out and applause so you will have a chance to win the $500 cash prize.
Those interested in competing may call 704-694-3552 or e-mail holla@wadesboro.com for an application and rules. There is a $15 contestant entry fee. General admission to the entire event is $10. Food will be available.
Anson Idol is sponsored by HOLLA! Proceeds from the event will go toward the HOLLA! Resource and Development Center in Morven and the HOLLA! 100 Reasons to Achieve Initiative. Students who attend class and have not received a Step 4 from the beginning to the end of each nine-week period of learning will qualify to receive a HOLLA! award. These awards may be in the form of cash, certificates and/or other incentives.
Qualifiers at the middle school, Early College, Challenge Academy, New Tech and high schools will be invited to compete in an essay contest. The winner of the essay contest entitled, “If I Ruled The World” will be awarded a $1,000 savings bond. The essays must be turned in to school principals no later than Friday, January 22, 2010 at noon. The essay winner will be recognized on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 during the HOLLA!/Hampton B. Allen Literary Festival at the Hampton B. Allen Library.
Anson Idol is HOLLA!'s primary fundraiser for the year. "Your support will allow us to continue providing programs and services to enhance the dreams of our children’s futures," said a HOLLA! spokesperson.
