A Wadesboro man was arrested for first degree arson Oct. 25.

Allen Antonio Rivers, 41, allegedly set fire to an apartment on Myrtlewood Drive at roughly 6:38 a.m. Oct. 25. No one was hurt.

"Upon arrival, there was a little bit of chaos," Wadesboro Police Chief Janie Schutz said.

Police received a call Sunday of a man running through traffic who was hit by a vehicle. Schutz described the man as "extremely intoxicated." The subject, Rivers, was placed under arrest.

He had been involved in a domestic dispute all night before the alleged arson in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, who lived there with her son. Schutz said it was not his official residence but he stayed there.

After she left with her son in the early morning hours, she said he turned the burners in the home on, broke up a table and chairs, placed them in the middle of the apartment and set them on fire.

The tenants in the attached apartments have since been able to move back in, Schutz said.

Aside from the felony arson charge, Rivers was also charged with misdemeanor injury to personal property, misdemeanor resisting a public official and misdemeanor assault of a government official.

After his arrest, he was taken to Anson Community Hospital, although Schutz described him as unharmed after being hit by the vehicle. He is in the Anson County Jail under a $90,000 bond.

"This was extremely serious," she said.

The investigation began after the Wadesboro Fire Department found the fire suspicious. A State Bureau of Investigation task force assisted on the arson investigation.
