Anson County School Superintendent Dr. Greg Firn and Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) met recently in Washington, D.C., to discuss education and the needs of the Anson County school system.

During their meeting, Dr. Firn and Congressman Kissell spoke about the importance of education, Anson County Schools and the success of the Anson High JROTC program. They also discussed the need for a North Carolina military college since the state has a large military presence and no senior military college.

“I am pleased that Dr. Firn has shown a strong commitment to working at all levels to improve the educational opportunities for Anson County students," Kissell said. "It was good to have the opportunity to sit down with him to discuss the needs of the Anson County schools. We must continue to invest in ways to strengthen education for all children in the Eighth District."

Kissell spent seven years teaching high school in Montgomery County.

Dr. Firn spoke of the visit as being both necessary and productive. Firn said, “Though I did not ask specifically for funding for any particular program we did discuss his views and position on ‘earmarks,’ as Congress approved an earmark in the form of a grant for equipment. The grant is providing two new computer labs at Wadesboro Elementary and additional technology equipment at Anson Middle School. This technology will be used to provide even greater access and use of Fast ForWord, Reading and Assistant, and other interventions to drive student learning and achievement.”
