The Anson High School Bearcats begin a play after the snap by quarterback Jordan Hildreth during Friday night's 35-14 victory over Bluffton.
The Battle of the 'Cats ended with a victory for Anson High School, 35-14.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead, 7-0, over the Bluffton High School Bobcats.
It was part of a steady offensive barrage on the part of the Bearcats. With 3:46 left in the first quarter, Jonathan Hough caught a school-record 99-yard touchdown pass.
Hough finished the night with four receptions for 133 yards and one touchdown.
The successful extra point made it 14-0, Anson. The score would remain the same at the end of the first quarter.
Minutes after a touchdown pass was called back because of a penalty, Brandon Ellerbe finished a Bearcat drive by rushing for Anson's third touchdown of the evening. It was the first of two touchdowns for Ellerbe, who rushed for 109 yards over the course of the game.
The score was 21-0, Anson, with just over eight minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Anson quickly turned the ball around, a pattern for the evening. The Bearcats rushed for another touchdown with 3:50 remaining in the half.
"Defense played well. That was a big key for us," head coach Luke Hyatt said in an e-mail. "They forced 3 and outs all night long, and the offense took advantage of their opportunities as well."
The score would remain 28-0 in Anson's favor at halftime.
Quarterback Jordan Hildreth scored Anson's final touchdown of the evening, rushing it in with 5:27 remaining in the third quarter. Hildreth completed nine of 11 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 40 yards and a touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Bluffton prevented a shutout by scoring twice.
"We didn't turn the ball over. When we don't turn the ball over, we seem to play pretty good football," Hyatt said of his team's performance.
While Anson delivered on both sides of the ball, Hyatt said there was always room for improvement.
"We can still get a lot better in all aspects of the game. We still missed a few assignments, missed a few tackles and have some holes on special teams, but we are getting better every week," he said.
Anson's next game will be at home against Hoke County High School at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2. It will be the last non-conference game of the year.
"Hoke County will be a great challenge for us. They are a very athletic football team. We are going to have to play our best ball. We have to play fast and play without making mistakes," Coach Hyatt said.
The Bearcats are 3-2 overall.
