A blood drive on Wednesday, Sept. 24, garnered 30 units of blood for the Red Cross.

The drive was held at First Presbyterian Church in Wadesboro. It was sponsored by the Anson Women's League (AWL).

Unfortunately the goal for the drive was 40 units of blood.

"So far it's been kind of slow," Red Cross supervisor Linda Koch said at 4 p.m. The drive lasted from 1:30-6 p.m.

As she hoped would be the case, more donors came in the latter part of the day. Only 12 people had donated at 4 p.m.

She was sympathetic. "Sometimes people aren't able to donate as often," she said. One person was turned away because there was too little iron in their blood.

"This is our first time hosting a drive," AWL president Ross Huntley said.

The group decided to sponsor a drive by request.

Judy Duston came to one of the club's meetings and asked Huntley afterward if the club would be interested in sponsoring a drive. Duston is the director of blood services for the Union County chapter of the Red Cross.

The drive was bolstered by numerous AWL members who came to volunteer their services.
