A Wadesboro man has been arrested after allegedly shooting his wife twice late Saturday.

Tommy Lee Smith, 29, turned himself in Monday evening. He is being held on a $50,000 bond at the Anson County Jail.

Officers with the Wadesboro Police Department were called to East Landsford Drive at roughly 11:06 p.m. Aug. 29, Wadesboro Police Chief Janie Schutz said.

Lakita Campbell, 26, had allegedly been shot once in the left arm and once in the left thigh by her husband, Tommy Lee Smith.

Smith fled the scene on foot and was pursued for a time by a K-9 unit with the Anson County Sheriff's Office. However, the unit lost the trail around Gill Circle.

When Officers Jeff McCormick and Matt Norris, along with Sgt. Clint Neeley, responded to the scene, they found three women standing in the road, one of whom was holding the 22-caliber rifle allegedly used in the shooting. The three women were Campbell, her sister and a juvenile.

Campbell was standing when officers arrived on the scene.

Officers instructed the woman to put down the rifle and she complied.

Details about the dispute are unclear since Campbell has been uncooperative with investigators. However, investigators have determined eight shots were fired into a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer containing Campbell. She was alone in the vehicle.

She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center.

"This is extremely typical in many domestic situations," Schutz said of Campell's refusal to cooperate.

She stressed Campbell was lucky and said domestic violence was a "huge problem."

Victims of domestic violence, most of whom are women, become trapped in a "vicious circle" and it is difficult for them to escape the situation, she said.

Schutz expressed admiration for the officers who responded to the call.
