As the sun set behind the visitor's bleachers, friends, family, schoolmates and other citizens watched the Anson High School Bearcats practice, drill and scrimmage.
Players passed balls, ran laps and practiced tackles. People in the stands cheered a particularly well-executed block or gasped at a hard hit.
Offensive players wore blue jerseys while defensive players wore orange. Onlookers attempted to find the player they knew on the field, since the jerseys lacked names. The announcer praised players by jersey number.
The Bearcat Booster Club sold tickets, and a raffle was also held.
The weather was a lot hotter than usual during football season. Refreshments were available to help onlookers beat the heat.
The kicker practiced field goals until later in the evening, the scrimmage began.
The varsity and JV squads practiced passing and rushing.
"With it being our first day of contact it gave us a better insight of some of the things we need to work on," head coach Luke Hyatt said. He added he was proud of the effort on both sides.
He thought the defense played very fast while the offensive line was still struggling with some nagging injuries.
He said the team's strength was its returning core. The offensive line and the front seven on defense were back.
Coach Hyatt also said the team benefitted from the return of quarterback Jordan Hildreth.
"He has a good grasp on the offense," he said.
He said the team has a million things it needs to work on but would approach the problems one at a time.
The team will play a scrimmage at Cheraw High School at 9 p.m. Aug. 15. Tickets may be purchased in advance at AHS for $5. Tickets at the gate will be $7.
The team's first regular game of the season will be at home Aug. 21 against Forest HIlls.
