Unemployment in Anson edged upward in June, according to the latest statistics from the Employment Security Commission.

The unemployment rate in Anson increased from 15 percent in May to 15.3 percent in June, according to a statement from the commission dated July 24.

The trend was the same statewide, with unemployment increasing from 11 percent to 11.2 percent.

"Outside of a few counties, there wasn't a lot of change in the rates going up or down," ESC Chairman Moses Carey Jr. said in the statement.

By contrast, in June 2008 the unemployment rate in Anson was 8 percent.

Anson has a higher rate than the surrounding counties in the state. Stanly has a rate of 12.4 percent, Richmond's rate is 14 percent and Union's rate is 11.3 percent.

Seven of North Carolina's 100 counties have a higher rate than Anson.

Some parts of North Carolina are feeling the recession more than others. Seventy-two counties have a rate higher than 10 percent while the rest are somewhere between 5 and 10 percent.

Currituck and Hyde counties had the lowest rate with 6.2 percent, while Scotland County had the highest with 17.2 percent.

Locally the job market has looked a little brighter with the upcoming opening of Waffle House in Wadesboro and the recent announcement of new jobs at Coffing Hoists.

"We've had quite a few people inquire" about the positions at Coffing Hoists, Grady Kindley, the Anson County JobLink Manager, said.

The Waffle House is projected to open Aug. 5, Vicki Garner, the construction coordinator, said. She added construction was finished.
