The Rev. Jeanett Elizabeth Bennett Monroe, 72, died June 19, 2009.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. June 27 at Savannah A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Haven O. Anderson officiating. Interment followed the service at Westview Memorial Park.

She was born June 10, 1937, in Anson County to the late Elder Joseph B. Bennett and Delphia Flowers Bennett. She was the youngest of 10 siblings.

She attended Fayetteville State Teachers College, The College of St. Elizabeth, Covent Station, N.J., The Newark-New Brunswick Ministerial Institute, N.J., and the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, New Brunswick, N.J. She was an ordained elder and served as assistant pastor at Bethel A.M.E. Church, Boontown, N.J.

Shortly after relocating to North Carolina, she became affiliated with Kesler Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Wadesboro and served as assistant to the pastor and youth minister. In September 2001, Monroe was assigned her first pastorate, Savannah A.M.E. Zion Church.

She followed in the steps of her father, whose first pastorate was the old Savannah Church "on the river" (the Pee Dee River) in the late 1930s and 1940s. The old church was rebuilt in 1964 on its current site.

She was married to Percy L. Monroe, whom she fondly called "Buddy" for 52 years. They had four children.

She was preceded in death by six siblings, Walter Donnell Bennett, John Dexter Bennett, Ola Beatrice McCray, Joleitha B. Jones, Mary F. Hairston and Zella Welch Ingram.

She is survived by her husband, Buddy; son, Percy (Buddy) Monroe III of North Brunswick, N.J.; three daughters, Shazonna Renee Monroe of North Brunswick, N.J., Andrae (Michael) Catherine Monroe-Green of South Brunswick, N.J., and Joy Adele Monroe of Newark, N.J.; eight grandchildren; sister, Marva Saunders of Charlotte; two brothers, Charles Bennett of Manassas, Va., and Rufus Bennett of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Angelena Bennett of Washington, D.C., and Frances Bennett of Orlando, Fla.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
