Funeral services were held at noon July 7 at Smith's Memorial Chapel with the Rev. George Cook Jr. officiating. Interment followed the service at Westview Memorial Park.
He was born Nov. 21, 1941, in Wadesboro. He was the second of 14 children born to Dr. and Mrs. Wade Hampton Gatewood of Wadesboro.
He confessed Christ at an early age and was a member of West Rocky Ford Baptist Church prior to relocating to Charlotte.
He graduated from Anson County Training School in Wadesboro and continued his education at Richmond Technical College in Rockingham and Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge.
On Sept. 24, 1965, he was wed to Carolyn Virginia Peguese, with whom he had three children.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Anderson and Aaron.
He is survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Wade H. Gatewood of Wadesboro; wife, Carolyn Peguese Gatewood; three children, Wade (Leslie) Anthony and Carolyn Wennetta, of Charlotte and Darwin (Tiffany) Maurice of Baltimore, Md.; seven brothers, Clyde (Emma) Sylvester, Julius (Hazel) Cecil, Joseph (Patricia) Kelly of Charlotte, Robert (Peggy) Lewis of Fort Washington, Md., Leon of Wadesboro, Curtis (Odessa) Everette of Oxford and Daniel (Alice) of Albemarle; four sisters, Geneva (Robert) Farmer and Evelyn (John - deceased) Allison of Charlotte, Lillian (Marvis) Rorie of Monroe and Angela Rachel Gatewood of Wadesboro; aunt Aggie Dean of Wadesboro; two uncles, Walter Ray Gaddy of Wadesboro and Clyde Gaddy Jr. of Charlotte; seven grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The services are in the care of Smith's Funeral Directors.
