The Wadesboro Rotary Club held its annual Scholarship Banquet on May 28 at Twin Valley Country Club. The club awarded a total of seven scholarships this year, including six to high school seniors and one to a student at South Piedmont Community College. The scholarships are awarded based on a combination of scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, community service, an essay in which the student describes what the motto of Rotary International, Service Above Self, means to them, a letter of reference and an interview with the scholarship committee.

Callie Herring received the $1,500 scholarship honoring the late Tom M. Little. Elizabeth Goins received the $1,500 scholarship honoring the late Henry W. Little. This scholarship was presented by Henry’s daughter, and fellow Rotarian, Carly Little.

Rachel Huntley received the $1,000 Distinguished Rotarian Scholarship, given this year in honor of the club’s 2009 Distinguished Rotarian, Don Scarborough. Joshua Jarman received the $1,000 Club Scholarship. Salena Tyson and Chelsey Landis both received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship.

Katie Knight was recognized as the 2008-2009 Lois McLean Crumpler Scholarship recipient. Katie is a recent graduate of South Piedmont Community College.

Dana Maness, president of the Wadesboro Rotary Club noted, “On behalf of the Wadesboro Rotary Club, it is an honor to recognize a tremendous group of future leaders.”

This year the Wadesboro Rotary Club provided $7,500 in scholarships, representing the single largest donation made by the club.
