Last Saturday, May 9, the Pee Dee Wildlife Refuge played host to its annual fishing rodeo.
Approximately 50 people attended the event, which took place from 8 a.m. until noon at Sullivan's Pond on the refuge.
Prizes were awarded for the largest, smallest and most fish caught. The prize for the biggest fish went to Ken McCormick for a 12-inch crappie.
Lunch and prizes were provided by the Friends of the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge, a nonprofit support group. Fishing supplies were provided by the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission stocked the pond with catchable size catfish on 5/6/09 prior to the event.
"Everyone enjoyed the new fishing pier," said refuge manager J.D. Bricken. The new pier opened last month and was constructed as a result of a partnership between the N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
