Joshua Goudelock and his fellow graduates at the South Piedmont Community College Basic Skills Graduation celebrate their new status by turning their tassels. Graduates at this ceremony earned either a GED or adult high school diploma.
South Piedmont Community College (SPCC) held two graduation ceremonies Thursday, May 14, at the Union County Agricultural Conference Center in Wingate. SPCC President John McKay presided over the two ceremonies.

The 2 p.m. Basic Skills Graduation honored 281 General Educational Development (GED) graduates and 22 adult high school graduates.

The 6 p.m. ceremony honored 301 college graduates earning associate degrees, diplomas and certificates. Student speakers were Natasha Bailey, a human services technology graduate; Elizabeth Goins, an Anson County Early College grad and Associate in Arts degree recipient; and Ursula Lohn, a practical nursing graduate.

Anson County Schools Superintendent Greg Firn conferred high school diplomas upon the first graduates of the Anson County Early College during the college graduation. SPCC President McKay conferred college degrees upon the ACEC grads who successfully completed associate in arts degrees.

Medical sonography clinical coordinator Jill Millard was awarded the 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award. Millard, who began her career in ultrasound in 1987, was recently honored with the North Carolina Ultrasound Society’s 2008-09 Sonographer Excellence Award.

SPCC awarded honorary degrees to Bronnie Little Braswell of Wingate and Max Melton of Monroe. SPCC Trustees Chairman Harvey H. Leavitt III made the presentations.

Braswell, a graduate of Catawba College, moved to Wingate in 1940 with her husband, James Robert Braswell. She served many years as a substitute teacher at Wingate Elementary, and has been a faithful supporter of education in the region. Through gifts from the James R. Braswell and Bronnie L. Braswell Trust, she supported the establishment of the New Century Scholars and Braswell Ambassadors program at SPCC. Both programs provide scholarships to selected SPCC students, who commit to meeting scholarship and public service requirements.

In addition to SPCC, Braswell has been faithful in her support of many local nonprofits, including the Union County Habitat for Humanity, the Union County chapter of the American Red Cross, HealthQuest, Wingate University, Turning Point, Union County Crisis Assistance Ministry and Anson Crisis Ministry, the Arc of Union County, Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Charlotte Rescue Mission.

Melton, a former N.C. representative, county commissioner and school board member, was honored for his service to SPCC and the SPCC Foundation. Melton was instrumental in the legislative work that resulted in the creation of SPCC. During the SPCC Foundation’s Investment for Tomorrow Campaign that raised more than $3 million, Melton served as co-chair for lead gifts in Union County.

Melton has been involved with numerous nonprofit organizations, including Hospice of Union County, HealthQuest, Habitat for Humanity, Rotary, First Baptist Church of Monroe and Gideons.

SPCC’s two Academic Excellence Award winners, Karen Arney of Waxhaw and Elizabeth Goins of Wadesboro, were recognized during the college graduation.
