The county proposed raising sewer rates 3.88 percent over current rates at the Anson County Board of Commissioners meeting May 5.

While the charge for the first 2,000 gallons would remain $11, every thousand gallons afterward would be $2.82 rather than the current $2.71. Rates for Marshville, for which the county provides sewer, would be raised 3.87 percent, with the same rate for the first 2,000 and every thousand afterward costing $2.83.

A resolution of support was passed for the creation of the Yadkin River Trust, which would allow Stanly, Davidson, Montgomery and Rowan counties to create a trust.

The commissioners amended the resolution to state their support, rather than full support. Also, they changed wording to state the trust would benefit the citizens of the region, rather than specifically the citizens of Anson.

Requests to fill vacancies at two agencies were approved, at Hampton B. Allen Library and the Department of Social Services.

The library position was due to an upcoming retirement and the social services openings were due to a resignation, a retirement and a termination.

Superintendent Greg Firn and Board of Education chairwoman Lisa Davis came to the board to ask for money for teacher supplement pay. The board asked for a set of clear guidelines and criteria to determine who would be eligible before taking action.

“I want clear criteria for recipients,” Commissioner Chairwoman Anna Baucom said.

“We are committed to doing that,” Firn said.

Several appointments were made. Mary Ratliff and Dr. Lacy Hobgood were appointed to the board of health. Marilyn Addison was appointed to the library board of trustees.

Richard Broadaway was appointed to the citizens advisory board from District 4. County clerk Bonnie Huntley was reappointed to the Wadesboro planning board.
