Just before midnight on Sunday night, May 3, Wadesboro police found the body of James Patrick Pickett, 31, of Wadesboro, lying in the front yard of a residence on Salisbury Street in Wadesboro.

Pickett had been shot once in the face and once in the back, Detective Sgt. Brandon Chewning said.

"Just before midnight Sunday night, myself and the captain and every detective we have worked the scene," Wadesboro Police Chief Janie Schutz said. "When officers arrived— within one minute of the shots fired call— they located the body of a black male lying in the front yard in the vicinity of Main and Salisbury streets."

A motive for the shooting is unclear, Sgt. Chewning said, but he added that police have several suspects and he expects arrests to be made soon.

The investigation was ongoing as of press time Tuesday morning.
