The Anson County Board of Education reopened the search for a new board member at its meeting Thursday.

Chairwoman Lisa Davis read a statement saying the application process would start over, due to concerns about procedure.

The seat formerly held by M.R. Bell has been vacant since her death Jan. 27.

Two candidates were interviewed at the board's April 27 meeting, Leon Gatewood and the Rev. Walter Ellerbe. Each was interviewed separately during closed session.

Davis said Tuesday no decision was made at the meeting April 27, but the board had been advised to reopen the process. She deferred questions about why the process had been reopened to board attorney Michael Flake.

Flake said Thursday a decision was made at the board's meeting April 27, but would not comment further.

The board also voted Thursday to take a salary cut of one-half percent, which passed unanimously.
