“If I just keep my eyes closed I know this will be over soon,” Anson Cadet Mariah Grade seems to be saying on her first rappel.
Thirty Anson High School JROTC cadets traveled to East Rowan High School March 27 for a day of training.

What made the training unique was that cadets were training cadets. East Rowan cadets trained the Bearcats on rappelling techniques off the 40-foot rappel tower.

Cadets initially came down the 20-foot inclined wall, then on to the 40-foot sheer wall, and finally the 40-foot free-fall (no wall), with some of the cadets doing this event headfirst. Once all cadets had completed the walls, they were turned loose on the rock climbing wall and then ran the East Rowan obstacle course.

It was a super day. A few of the Anson cadets had to reach deep to overcome their natural fear of heights and make the trip down the 20-foot wall.

You could see them physically shaking as they executed the task. Twenty minutes later you were watching them make their third or fourth trip down the 40-foot wall like they had been doing it all their lives.

Their grins were ear to ear. What a great feeling to face and overcome your fears. Like one of the cadets said, “I’m never going to forget this day. It has been great!”
