The town of Lilesville hosted its annual Catfish Stew Cook-Off on Saturday at Hatcher Park.
The warm, sunny weather brought a good turnout for the event’s third year. There were a number of vendors selling all types of jewelry, hand bags, custom wreaths, funnel cakes, hot dogs, and snacks. The town of Lilesville also sold T-shirts to celebrate the event.
There were six entries in the catfish stew cook-off — four chose a red or tomato base and two entries had a white or milk base.
For the third straight year, Ben Smith of Lilesville took home the overall first place prize of $250. Second place went to “The Wolf Pit Boys,” Randy Ussery and Mitchell Grant of Rockingham. Ussery and Grant also won the top red or tomato-based stew. The top white or milk-based catfish stew prize was a tie between Teresa Burr and Curtis Carpenter, both of Lilesville.
