Rufus “Rufe” Allen Livingston, of West End, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, March 1, 2013, after a brief illness. He died at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 29, 1924, in McFarlan to the late Hugh Alford and Clara Allen Livingston.
Rufe is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Shirley Gipe Livingston, and for the past 20 years they made their home at Seven Lakes South. Also surviving is his daughter, Sandy Livingston Myers of Okinawa, Japan; two grandchildren, Denise Stover Thomas of Marshall, Texas, and Rufus Allen Stover of Baltimore, Md.; brothers, Henry Alford Livingston (Sarah) of Morven, and Johnny Robinson Livingston (Glenda) of Wadesboro, and sister, Clara Ann Gathings of Wadesboro; great-grandchildren, Candice Powell (Brandon) and Brian Stover, both of Marshall Texas, and Catherine and Jacqueline Stover of Baltimore Md.; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee Livingston, and a sister, Polly Marie Edwards.
He attended N.C. State University in Raleigh. Having spent 23 years in the U.S. Air Force, Rufe retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. During his tour of duty he received numerous awards, and during World War II he piloted B-29 and B-47 planes for Strategic Air Command until his retirement in 1964.
He was an active member of Lions International, where he had been a member for 50 years. An avid and accomplished golfer, he seldom passed up a chance to play golf, anywhere and with most anyone. He played golf until a few weeks before his death.
Rufe will long be remembered for his faithful Christian witness, his warm cheery greetings and affectionate hugs for everyone he met.
A memorial service was held at the Village Chapel, where Rufe and Shirley attended faithfully, in Pinehurst on March 5.
