Boy Scouts from varied troops and packs celebrated at the Anson District Banquet at the Lockhart-Taylor Center on Tuesday evening.

Over 100 assembled Boy Scouts, Cub Packs, Venture Crew, their families and volunteers enjoyed dinner while many of their peers were recognized. Ethan Wilson was recognized as an Eagle Scout, the highest rank achievable in Boy Scouts. Bruce Goodwin of Pack 525 was awarded Den Leader of the Year. Laura Laney of Pack 530 was awarded Assistant Cub Master of the Year. Wheeler Buckingham of Pack 530 was chosen as Cub Master of the Year.

Chris McCormick of Troop 170 was elected Assistant Scoutmaster of the Year. Perry Johnson of Troop 589 was awarded Scoutmaster of the Year. Membership Chairman John Ratliff was awarded Scouter of the Year and District Commissioner Richard Tamura was named Volunteer of the Year. Tara Eudy, a former chairperson with Friends of Scouting, was given the District Award of Merit.

The Scouts also participated in Scouting for Food, collecting food and money (each dollar was worth 7 pounds of food) for Anson Crisis Ministry. Cub Scout Pack 530 collected 654.4 pounds and a $300 check (equivalent to 2,100 pounds) for a total of 2,754.4 pounds collected. Boy Scout Troop 170 collected 439.2 pounds of food and $204 cash (equivalent to 1414 pounds) for a total of 1,853.2 pounds. The total amount of food collected was 2,034.8 pounds of food in addition to $502 in contributions, according to Chris Sanford, Anson District BSA Chairman. Anson Crisis Ministry director Ann James accepted the donations and thanked the Scouts and volunteers.

One small Scout received a big donation. Parker Griffin of Pack 530 received a $300 check from his church in addition to food donations, all of which were presented to James for the ministry.

The Boy Scouts are one of the nation’s largest values-based youth development organization, according to its website. Several Troops and Packs (for younger Scouts) are based in Wadesboro, Ansonville, Peachland, Mount Gilead, and other locations.
