The teen pregnancy rate for Anson County was 68.7 per 1,000 15- to 19-year-old girls in 2011, according to a report from the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of North Carolina.

APPCNC’s data indicates that there were 57 pregnancies among 15- to 19-year-old girls last year alone, with 29.8 percent of them repeat pregnancies.

Anson ranked 12 out of 100 North Carolina counties for teen pregnancies in 2011, according to APPCNC.

Resources for teen parents include the Teen Information and Parenting Services (TIPS) from the Anson County Partnership for Children. TIPS “serves adolescents who are pregnant or parenting their first child and their children,” according to its website.

The program requires participants to be in school or working on a GED. The goal for the teens is that they “remain in school, avoid a repeat pregnancy, and work toward life management skills,” as well as learn to become their child’s teacher through the “Born to Learn” curriculum by Parents as Teachers, according to the website. Additionally, participants receive transportation assistance to medical appointments, group meetings and other appointments as well as subsidy for their children to receive quality child care. Participants are also expected to cooperate with group meetings and personal home visits, according to the site.
