He said he was tentatively scheduled to start the job May 1, with his final day at AHS tentatively set for the last work day in April.
"It was a great opportunity," he said.
McMahon has led the team to a 21-7 record in his time as coach.
"We've had a lot of success," he said.
"He did an outstanding job here," AHS athletic director Fred Davis said.
As far as a replacement goes, "we do have someone in mind but I can't release it," Davis said.
McMahon will replace Mike Clowney, who coached the Emerald High School Vikings for three seasons. Last year the Vikings went 4-8.
A 1981 graduate of Freedom High School in Burke County, McMahon earned a bachelor's degree in social studies from Catawba College in 1985 and a master's degree from the University of Phoenix last year.
In a letter to the Anson Record, McMahon praised his teams, and both Athletic Director Fred Davis and assistant coach Luke Hyatt.
“The support and guidance from Fred Davis was critical in the success of our football program. His leadership as Athletic Director has been the foundation from which we built our program. Without coach Davis I am confident that I would not have had this opportunity here at Anson.
“Luke Hyatt, our assistant head football coach, as been almost irreplaceable in his efforts and contributions to our program. Many times he has picked up the mantle of leadership in my stead. Each time Coach Hyatt has shown great ability to lead our program.”
