The busy fall festival season in Anson County kicked off Saturday morning with Morven’s annual October Fest.
Next weekend will see People Fest in uptown Wadesboro, followed by a fall festival near Halloween, and the Discover Anson Bike Ride and Homecoming celebration in Ansonville in November.
An October Fest opening ceremony was held in downtown Morven at 10 a.m. Saturday, and was attended by several local political candidates and dignitaries. After Pastor Larry King of the United Methodist charge in Morven led an invocation, the Anson High School JROTC presented the colors and event emcee Vancine Sturdivant recognized Morven Mayor Houston Pratt, Morven Town Council members present and Morven Police Chief Rick Little.
Chief Little gave the small crowd a few safety tips and reminded festival-goers that traffic in the downtown area had been blocked off until 5:30 p.m., after a few “close calls” during last year’s festival.
Congressman Larry Kissell was in attendance, as well as N.C. House candidate Dale Nelson, and County Commissioners Anna Baucom and Ross Streater.
“We are very fortunate to have this opportunity and live in this place,” Nelson said.
Throughout the day-long festival and street fair, food, drinks, crafts and other goods were available. A Gospel Explosion concert was held that morning, as well as a car show, parade and other live entertainment.
