Anson County’s unemployment rate rose to 13.1 percent for the month of August, according to statistics released by the the North Carolina Department of Commerce - Labor and Economic Analysis Division Friday morning.
That number was up 0.7 percent from July’s final figure of 12.4 percent, and up 0.9 percent from August 2011’s unemployment rate of 12.2 percent.
Anson was one of 18 North Carolina counties in which unemployment increased in August. Most counties — a total of 72 — experienced a decrease in unemployment in August.
Currituck County had the state’s lowest unemployment rate in August at 4.7 percent, while Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate at 17.2 percent.
Anson’s neighboring counties got slightly better news on the unemployment front, with Richmond’s 12.7 percent rate remaining the same, and unemployment numbers dropping in both Stanly and Union counties, to 9.8 and 8.4 percent, respectively.
