Anson High School was awarded a $1,000 grant for hosting one of the top-performing blood drives with the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) in the 2011-2012 school year, according to a press release from CBCC’s Jennifer Krupa.

Anson is one of 10 schools to win one of the grants, which are awarded by CBCC to support schools and their students.

“Students make up 20 percent of our donor base so we appreciate the valiant efforts and commitment of all of our region’s high schools and students who donate blood with us,” Martin Grable, president and CEO of CBCC, said in the press release. “We are proud to recognize these top-performing high schools that went above and beyond in hosting blood drives throughout the year to ensure local patients have access to life-saving blood.”

The “High School Grant” program is one of several ways CBCC will ultimately offer $36,000 in scholarships and grants throughout the year, according to Krupa’s press release. CBCC focuses on gathering blood from volunteer donors to save local lives in 16 North Carolina and three South Carolina counties.

Anson will host another blood drive on Oct. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is sponsoring the drive with Community Blood Services collecting the blood. Community members are encouraged to donate and will be moved to the top of the line when they come in.
