East Hoke was a very tough competitor and was well coached. I commend the head coach, the entire coaching staff, as well as the talented young ladies on a great game.
I would like to acknowledge my assistant coaches, Guianna Webster and Sara Smith, for all of their help, hard work and cooperation throughout the season.
The AMS Lady Bearcats played strong and aggressive defense and well executed their offensive attack from the tip-off of the game. The game was close throughout with Anson leading 9-6 first quarter, 21-15 at halftime, 31-24 in the third quarter and tied at 33-33 with 27.1 seconds left in the game. Player of the game and leading scorer with 22 points, Zharia Alderson, was fouled and hit one of the two foul shots, making the score 34-33.
The Lady Bearcats stole the ball on an East Hoke in-bounds play and capitalized, giving the Bearcats a 36-33 lead. Again, tenacious defense prevailed and the Lady Bearcats’ press proved too much as they once again recovered the ball and scored for two more points, thus putting the game out of reach as the clock ran out and winning the Conference Championship by a score of 38-33. The commitment and determination demonstrated by the AMS Lady Bearcats was indicative of a champion’s attitude.
The highlights of the game not only gave special recognition to the leading scorer and the championship player of the game, Zharia Alderson, but to two defensive phenoms, Michelle McLeod and Jazmon Legrande with McLeod leading the way with assists and outstanding passing. Rebounding sensations, Justice Lindsey, Kamilah Hardin and Ashley Lindsey, proved effective on the boards and the quickness of Shaniqua Bennett was also a key factor to winning the title.
I would like to especially recognize the entire Anson Middle School Lady Bearcats basketball team for all their hard efforts, participation and contributions to this team. Great job girls!
Also, as the coach of the Anson Middle School boys’ basketball team, I acknowledge these talented young athletes for a successful season finishing third in the Conference.
Last but not least, I give thanks and honor to God for a wonderful season! To the parents of the athletes, fans, cheerleaders and coach, AMS athletic director and administration, thanks for your loyal support throughout the season.
