Anson County is gearing up for a real estate auction. The auction will be held Sept. 12 at noon on the steps of the Anson County Courthouse and includes fifteen properties located throughout the county.
The money from the sales will aid the county both immediately and in the future. “I’m really excited about monetizing these assets and getting them back into the tax base,” County Manager Lawrence Gatewood said in an email. “The proceeds from this auction and future auctions will be used to defray some of the cost of the new emergency services center and other capital products.”
This sale is the first of what may turn out to be a series. “This is the first time that anyone can recall that the county has had a surplus real estate auction,” Gatewood said. “We have had several very successful sales of surplus vehicles and equipment in recent years, but this is the first time surplus land has been sold by the county… we [are] planning to do more of these sales over the next 18 to 24 months.”
Several of these properties have been on our books for years, Gatewood added, with one dating back to the early 1970s. “Our plan is to sell each one to the highest bidder, which will in turn place these properties back into the tax base,” he said.
