On Aug. 20, The Anson Record welcomed a new staff writer, Imari Scarbrough. She replaces Justin Allen, who is now attending law school at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
Scarbrough is a recent graduate of Montreat College, where she earned a B.S. degree in communications with a concentration in journalism. She also minored in music and English. Originally from Winchester, Va., she moved to Amberson, Pa., at the age of 13. “I’ve spent the majority of my time from age 18 until just before moving to Wadesboro in Montreat, where I attended college and worked this summer,” she said.
While in college, Scarbrough served as a writing tutor, and copy editor, then editor-in-chief, of the student paper, The Whetstone. “I also worked as a receptionist/workstudy in Student Services and the Registrar’s Office to gain experience and help pay for college,” she said. “I played in a classical ensemble and a contemporary band (violin and bass guitar) and was an editor for the student literary magazine the Q.”
Scarbrough will cover a variety of local government, crime, sports and human interest news in Anson County. “I’m very excited to work at The Anson Record,” she said. “This is my first real job in my field and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to write on several different topics and explore Anson County. It’s been great meeting people in the town and at the Record this week and learning about the town of Wadesboro and the county.”
